Happy Holidays everyone!
Sorry for the lack of emails over the past few weeks. I got overrun with work, but I’m back now.
Summary
Location: lateral and most superficial of the abdominal muscle layers.
Origin: External surface of 5th – 12th ribs (lower 8 ribs)
Insertion: Anterior part (lateral lip) of iliac crest, rectus sheath to linea abla
Nerve: ventral rami of thoracic spinal nerves T5 - 12
Action: rotate your trunk to the opposite side. Compresses the abdomen. Contraction of one side flexes the trunk to that side and rotates it to the opposite side.
Day-to-day life
Function: digging with a shovel.
Common problem when weak: injury to the lumbar spine, because abdominal muscle tone contributes to the stability of this region.
